Yvonne Deutschman
was born in England, spent her childhood in Canada and then moved with her family to
Jamaica as a teenager. She returned to Quebec, Canada for her bachelors degree and,
after graduation, she enrolled in her first film and drama studies in Paris. Between
studies, she embarked on a six-month exploration of central and South America. Yvonne was one of the few
female students accepted into the prestigious post graduate film and television course at
Bristol University and was then recruited by the BBC. She worked for twelve years at
the BBC as a producer and director, working on a variety of dramas and documentaries.
She was the series creator and producer for the long running Afro-Caribbean music
and arts series Ebony.
While working in Bristol,
Yvonne noticed a lack of opportunity for young black people. She started the Arts
Opportunity Theatre in Bristol that provided an outlet for the talent and energy of
these young people. She wrote and produced an original stage musical called Freedom
City. The musical was so successful it was taken on the road
throughout the UK, Germany, Kenya and Jamaica over a period of seven years.
At the same time, she
continued to direct and produce BBC series and specials including: Secret Services,
Antiques Roadshow, Crimewatch UK, Casualty, Let the Music Talk, Under Sail, Paying the
Piper, Calling the Tune, Collecting Now, Looking Good, Black Roots, and
others.
After leaving the BBC, Yvonne undertook independent projects covering themes
such as the history of Europe in the 20th century, youth homelessness, and
technological breakthroughs in automotive and nautical design.
Throughout her career
(see full list of credits), Yvonne has retained her ties to the many countries she has
visited and in which she has lived. She credits her formative years in Canada with the
determination and perseverance required to bring in a film project on time and within
budget. Her ties to Jamaica remain especially strong and are a reminder that hard
work should be balanced with music, art and joie de vivre. |
